The Sport and Social Club CBRM (SSCC) is a non-profit organization focused on providing welcoming, inclusive, and fun-first sports and events for adults (19+) in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM). Our goal is to help newcomers and locals alike build social connections and maintain positive physical and mental health through a variety of sports, recreation, and social events. We strive to make our events accessible to all genders, fitness levels, and skill levels.

Current Positions

Sports and Recreation Leader 

The Sports and Recreation Leader is responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating Sport and Social Club CBRM activities and programs. A good fit for this role will be comfortable engaging in social situations and adept at creating inclusive and welcoming spaces through leading by example. As a frontline representative for SSCC, they play an essential role in fostering a welcoming and engaging atmosphere at all SSCC events. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing new recreational programs based on the needs and interests of SSCC’s participants and mandate.
  • Researching current trends and best practices in sport and recreation programming.
  • Collaborating with directors, volunteers, and other staff to ensure new programs reach underrepresented and underserved populations.
  • Working with marketing and promotion leads to develop strategies for promoting programs and events so that they reach a diverse and inclusive audience.
  • Organizing and coordinating special events, tournaments, and/or social activities, such as regular board game nights. Tasks may include securing necessary resources and facilities for events.
  • Developing and managing budgets for new programs and events.
  • Ensuring high quality experiences at all SSCC events by proactively connecting with participants and moderating game play experiences to ensure that everyone feels welcomed, included, and comfortable in SSCC spaces.
  • Being prepared for the risks inherent in sports and other physical activities and ensuring that facilitators have all required equipment, first aid kits, waivers, and policies. When possible, the Sports and Recreation Leader should proactively recognize and mitigate risks.
  • Evaluating programs by maintaining accurate records of program attendance, expenses, and other relevant information, and preparing reports on program outcomes and impact.
  • Assisting with regular programming (weekly drop-in ultimate frisbee, soccer, and/or basketball) under the supervision of SSCC Directors (duties may include: greeting participants, setting up equipment, checking in participants, taking payments, time keeping, etc.).
  • Completing general administrative tasks, including but not limited to submitting time sheets.

Note: The Sports and Recreation Leader position is a summer student funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. To apply for this job, you must:

  • Be aged between 15 and 30 years old on the start date of the job;
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN); and
  • Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.

International students and other temporary residents of Canada are not eligible.

Position Start Date: As early as June 10, 2024

Number of Weeks: 8

Hours Per Week: 35 (full time)

Wage: $15.50/hour
